The aim of this website is to educate people on the issues surrounding organ donation and transplantation, not to promote the subject or pressurise them into participation.
Every day we are faced with choices about a whole range of issues. This website is designed to enable you to make informed, educated decisions about organ donation.
There are four main steps we recommend anyone considering organ donation should follow:
- Education - make sure you fully understand the process should help rid you of any preconceptions or doubts.
- Evaluation - consider both arguments for and against.
- Reflection - take time to make the right decision for you.
- Expression - make sure loved ones are informed of your decision and that your wishes are also known by joining the organ donation register or stating it in your wishes.
For many people, approaching the subject with loved ones can be more difficult than making the decision itself. It is important to remember that for many people it is an uncomfortable topic that many people would rather not discuss.
However you must ensure your loved ones know your wishes because they may unwittingly prevent them from being carried out. In Scotland around 35% of relatives object to their loved one's organs being donated, even if they are on the register.
Helping friends and family to understand how you have come to reach your decision and why it is important to you can make their acceptance easier.
The materials in this pack are designed to provide you with all of the information you will need to make your decision but also effectively inform those closest to you.
