The generosity of donors and their families enables thousands of people in Scotland to take on a new lease of life each year.</p> <h2>What organs can be transplanted?</h2> <p>Kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, pancreas the small bowel and some tissues can be transplanted. Techniques are improving all the time and we may soon be able to transplant other parts of the body to help even more people.</p> <h2>What is the NHS Organ Donor Register?</h2> <p>The NHS Organ Donor Register is, quite literally, a life-saver. It is a confidential, computerised database which holds the wishes of more than 16 million people who have decided that, after their death, they want to donate their organs. The database is also used to help establish whether a person wanted to donate their organs.</p> <h2>Why are even more donors needed?</h2> <p>Each year hundreds of people die while waiting for an organ transplant and many others lose their lives before they even get on to the transplant list. The gap between the number of organs donated and the number of people waiting for a transplant is constantly increasing. 87% of the Scottish population between the age of 16-25 are already on the register, with numbers tailing off around the age of 30 - particularly men.</p> <p>When Music Manager, Bruce Findlay found out his older brother Brian would need a kidney transplant he immediately offered to donate. To hear more about their story <a href="brianbruce.htm">click here</a>.</p> <h2>Why do I need to make a decision about whether to become a donor?</h2> <p>In the UK, organs and tissue from a potential donor will only be used if that is their wish. You can indicate your wishes in a number of ways such as telling a relative or close friend, by carrying an organ donor card and recording your wishes on the NHS Organ Donor Register. Putting your name on the NHS Organ Donor Register makes it easier for the NHS and your relatives to establish your wishes.</p> <h2>What will happen if my relatives object?</h2> <p>By carrying a donor card or registering on the NHS Organ Donor Register, you are making your wishes known to healthcare professionals and your family. It means the medical team will be able to discuss the subject sensitively with family members who know that you wanted to be able to help and will help them understand the process and procedures.</p> <h2>What is a qualifying relationship?</h2> <p>A spouse or partner (including civil or same sex partner); parent or child; brother or sister and other relatives or a friend of long standing can all be classed as next of kin.</p> <h2>Should I put my wishes in my will?</h2> <p>No. By the time your will is read it is likely to be far too late for you to become a donor because organs and tissue need to be removed within 48 hours of death.</p> <h2>Is it possible to see the body after donation?</h2> <p>Yes. Families are given the opportunity to spend time with their loved one after the operation if they wish and this is facilitated by the specialist nurse in organ donation.</p> <h2>Can I change my mind?</h2> <p>Yes. You can call the Organ Donor Line on 0845 60 60 400 or go to website register <a href="https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ukt/Consent.do?campaign=1960" target="_blank">https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/</a> and ask for your name to be removed. If you have an organ donor card, tear it up. Let your family know that you have changed your mind.</p> </div> <div id="nav"> <p class="nav" > <img src="bullet.gif" alt="bullet point image" /><a href="introduction.htm">Introduction</a><br /> <img src="bullet.gif" alt="bullet point image" /><a href="subject.htm">Approaching the Subject</a><br /> <img src="bullet.gif" alt="bullet point image" /><a href="information.htm">General Information</a><br /> <img src="bullet.gif" alt="bullet point image" /><a href="allocation.htm">Organ Allocation</a><br /> <img src="bullet.gif" alt="bullet point image" /><a href="donation.htm">Types of Organ Donation</a><br /> <img src="bullet.gif" alt="bullet point image" /><a href="tissue.htm">Tissue Donation</a><br /> <img src="bullet.gif" alt="bullet point image" /><a href="questions.htm">Frequently Asked Questions</a><br /> <img src="bullet.gif" alt="bullet point image" /><a href="SUTSAL_Toolkit.zip">Download the Toolkit</a><br /> <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/sign-up-to-a-save-a-life/id417219247?mt=8&ls=1" target="_blank"><img src="download.gif" alt="Download the iPhone App" /></a><br /> </p> <hr /> <a href="endothelial.htm"><img src="quote2.gif" width="330" height="202" alt="Endothelial Corneal Transplant - read the Full Story" name="quoter" id="quoter" onmouseover="MM_swapImage('quoter','','quote1.gif',1)" onmouseout="MM_swapImgRestore()" /></a> <hr /> <div id="video"> <!--[if !IE]>--> <object type="video/x-ms-wmv" data="donor.wmv" width="330" height="250"> <!--<![endif]--> <!--[if IE]> <OBJECT ID="MSIE" WIDTH="330" HEIGHT="230" CLASSID="CLSID:22D6F312-B0F6-11D0-94AB-0080C74C7E95" TYPE="video/x-ms-wmv"> <![endif]--> <param name="src" value="donor.wmv" /> <param name="showcontrols" value="true" /> <param name="autostart" value="false" /> <param name="ShowStatusBar" value="false" /> <param name="ShowDisplay" value="false" /> <param name="TransparentAtStart" value="true" /> <param name="Volume" value="0" /> <param name="AutoSize" value="true" /> <param name="stretchToFit" value="true" /> <param name="animationatstart" value="true" /> <param name="bufferingtime" value="1" /> <img src="noplugin.gif" width="329" height="185" alt="You require Windows Media plugin to view this video" /> </object> </div> <div id="standalone"> <p class="sidelink"> <a href="large_donor.wmv"><img src="wmv.gif" alt="Windows Media logo" />WMV HQ (4.7MB)</a><br /> <a href="large_donor.mp4"><img src="mp4.gif" alt="Apple Quicktime logo" />MP4 Video (3.2MB)</a><br /> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/nhslothian#p/u/6/G_Xo-lGVNuY" target="_blank"><img src="youtube.gif" alt="You Tube logo" /></a></p> <p>&nbsp;</p></div> <div id="fifty"> <img src="fifty2.gif" width="330" height="528" alt="use your mobile to sign up now: text fifty to 61611" /> </div> </div> <div id="footer"> <div id="subfoot"><p>&nbsp;</p></div> <p><br />Copyright 2010 NHS Lothian <a href="terms.htm">Disclaimer, Terms and conditions of use and access of Sign Up to Save a Life Website</a></p> </div> </div> </body> </html>
