Continence products are not issued without an initial continence assessment by a trained Registered Nurse. The assessment will primarily examine the type of incontinence, what treatment options are appropriate and if necessary, determine containment products to best meet clinical need. Consideration would be given to patient choice but this may not reflect products available from NHS Lothian. Initial treatment/management should be carried out and reviewed regularly depending on an individual’s situation.
It is essential that an annual re-assessment is conducted to maintain patient care. This allows a review of current treatment plan. It also provides an opportunity to discuss new products that may better suit their clinical need.
Continence nurse specialists can assist health professionals with complex cases and respond to direct referrals from patients.
