From the Pill to the patch, and the condom to the coil, contraceptives come in many forms. None is 100% reliable, and all have their advantages, but all are designed to offer people much greater control over whether or not they have a baby.

Contraceptive advice is available free from your GP or from a specialist family planning clinic. Emergency contraception - the 'morning after' pill, which is actually effective up to 72 hours after sex - is also available from some community pharmacies.

While there are many different contraceptives available, most are aimed at women. After discussing your contraceptive needs with your doctor, he or she can then recommend a suitable method according to your age, lifestyle and medical history, and explain any side effects.

More information on family planning and the different types of contraceptive can be found on NHS Lothian’s Sexual Health website at www.lothiansexualhealth.scot.nhs.uk.
